History: Hitler’s bunker consisted mainly of two parts: the Vorbunker, built in 1936, and the Führerbunker, built in 1944.

Hitler moved into the bunker on January 16, 1945, as Allied and Soviet forces closed in on Berlin. From the bunker, Hitler micromanaged defenses, rarely leaving the bunker except for an appearance on his 56th birthday. On April 30, 1945, after hearing about Benito Mussolini’s execution, he shot himself. After Soviet forces captured the area, they made several attempts to destroy the bunker, but failed due to the site’s robust construction. In the late 1980s, during construction of apartment complexes around the area, the remaining sections were destroyed or filled in with rubble and sealed to prevent the site from becoming a Neo-Nazi shrine. Today, nothing of the bunker is visible, but there is a simple information board at the site.

My Visit: When I arrived at Hitler’s Bunker, it was raining heavily. Nothing of Hitler’s bunker was above ground, and all that remained was an information board. The board described what Hitler did at the site, and how it was submerged into the ground. It was surrounded by apartments, with a Boba shop to the right of it. I didn’t feel much, as the site only had an information board. After, I noticed it was almost 1 P.M., so I decided to head to the Deutschland Museum.
